Thyme Mother of Thyme Thymus Praecox is an herbaceous perennial plant native to southern, western, and central Europe. Mother of Thyme seeds can be planted indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors after the last frost. Also commonly called Creeping Thyme and Early Thyme, this perennial is a low-growing, creeping, woody-based plant that forms a dense mat of foliage with tiny, rounded, fuzzy, blue-green leaves, and this evergreen groundcover tolerates moderate foot traffic. Early Thyme blooms in summer with the showy clusters of tiny, tubular, star-shaped, whitish to rose-purple flowers. Thymus Praecox attracts bees and butterflies and resists deer and rabbits.
Thyme Mother of Thyme has a spicy fragrance, making it an excellent choice for a sensory garden, and the plant is often used as a lawn substitute, evergreen groundcover, container and pot plant, filler between steppingstones, and other garden uses include path edging, border planting, herb gardens, rock gardens, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens, planting along walkways, and as a plant that will sprawl over small rocks or ledges in the rock garden or on dry slopes. Thymus Praecox seeds need light to germinate, so they have to be just slightly pressed into the soil and not covered. Early Thyme is easily grown in average, dry to medium, sandy or rocky well-drained soils in full sun, tolerating drought and poor soils.
