Johnny Jump Up Viola Tricolor is a compact annual or short-lived perennial, native to Spain and the Pyrenees Mountains. Johnny Jump Up seeds can be started directly outdoors in spring or fall, and also commonly called Heartsease and Wild Pansy, Viola Tricolor grows low to the ground and produces vibrant blooms that are deep purple and yellow, creating a solid carpet of color for weeks all season long. Johnny Jump Up can flower all winter in areas with mild climate.

Johnny Jump Up has been used extensively in floral gardens for a long time, and Heartsease is popular for planting in containers, pots, hanging baskets, as a companion for spring bulbs, rock gardens, borders. If Viola Tricolor seeds are started indoors, it is advisable to stratify the seeds prior sowing. Johnny Jump Up grows best in full sun or partial shade and fertile, rich soil with plenty of moisture, but good drainage. Once established, Wild Pansy often spreads rapidly re-seeding itself, but this highly ornamental, attractive flower is always loved, not hated for its spreading habits.
