Ornamental Kale Brassica Oleracea is a hardy annual native to Europe. Ornamental Kale seeds are generally planted outdoors in late summer or early fall, since it is more prone to pest damage in warmer months. Ornamental Kale shows its best color if the plants are started indoors in late spring, and seedling are transplanted out in midsummer. The leaf color intensifies with cool weather.

Ornamental Kale looks beautiful in the front of a border or mixed together in window boxes and containers, and Ornamental Kale can be combined with chrysanthemums, sedum, and asters for a beautiful fall scene. Brassica Oleracea seeds germinate fast, and although very hardy, Ornamental Kale requires rich, organic soil, full sun, and regular watering. Many people cook and eat kale, which contains beta-carotene, calcium, and vitamin C. The leaves can be blanched, steamed, or stir fried, or added to soup.
